Open Enrollment Steps

1. Contact the "receiving district" (school district you desire for your children to attend) to see if open enrollment is an option in their district.
2. If yes, we would encourage you to schedule a time to visit the school you desire to open enroll into.  This would give the family and/or child(ren) the chance to get a feel for the school and the opportunity to meet the principal and school staff.
3. If you still wish to open enroll after visiting, you'll need to download and complete the appropriate “open enrollment application” from the Iowa Department of Education website.
4. Complete the application and submit to the "resident school district" for consideration and signatures.
   Note: Some school districts require school board consideration of open enrollment decisions. This step will likely require your child’s name to be considered on the school board agenda of an open public meeting.
5. Once signed and approved by the "resident school district," turn the form into the "receiving school district" for consideration. Again, this step may require your child’s name to be considered on the school board agenda of an open public meeting for consideration.
6. Once approved by the school board or administration in each school district, coordinate with the district office and make sure paperwork including transcripts and vaccination records are sent to the new school district.
